Week 90 – There was so much to explain
He had some major grovelling to do.Drake knew this wasn’t going to be easy. Rachel was so angry. She had every right to be, he’d hurt her deeply, although the choices he had made were what he thought was best at the time, to try to keep her alive and off the radar of the gang he’d been trying to bring down, now he knew it was a mistake. He should have taken his pregnant wife and run when he realised his cover was blown. But he’d been arrogant.Thinking he was too smart and that he could have it all, his family and the gang brought to their knees.Instead he’d been almost killed, Rachel had been raped and tortured and ended up losing their unborn daughter and very nearly her own life, and now it looked like he had lost her for good. There was so much to explain but he didn’t know where to start. The beginning he guessed, it was as good a place as any.Drawing in a deep breath Drake stepped into Rachel’s hospital room.He had stayed with her, clutching her in his arms, as cops descended on the house. He had refused to leave her side as she was bundled into the ambulance, and had sat beside her bed until she woke up. Then, like the coward it was turning out he was, he’d left, not wanting to upset her again.“Hi, Rach,” he said tentatively as he entered her room. Her eyes snapped towards him, a mixture of anger and hurt shining in them. The anger he could take it was the hurt that knifed straight through his heart. He hated that he had caused the woman he loved pain.“I was hoping I could talk to you,” Drake ignored Rachel’s glower and sat beside her.“Leave, Drake,” she ordered, her voice weak. She’d lost a lot of blood from the knife being plunged into her shoulder, but she’d live.“I can’t. Not until I explain. I never meant to hurt you. I thought I was protecting you. That night, when they were torturing us, knowing it was all my fault that you were being hurt, that crushed me. I blacked out, when I woke up I was in a hospital. The first thing I did was ask about you and they told me that my contact in the gang had somehow gotten us both out alive, that you were alive, and safe, but that our baby hadn’t made it. That killed me, Rach. I wanted to be there for you, but I was too weak, and they told me that the gang believed I was dead, they said if I went to you I’d be putting you in danger all over again. That was the only reason I didn’t tell you I was alive. I couldn’t let you be hurt again because of me. I was supposed to stay away from you but I couldn’t I’ve been watching the house for the last couple months. I should have told you, Rachel, I’m sorry.” Everything he’d been wanting to say to her for the last six months came tumbling out in a rush.“You’re sorry?” she demanded. “Sorry. You’re so selfish, Drake. You want to make this all about you but I was there too. I was kicked and beaten, cut and burned, raped. I went into premature labor. I had to deliver our baby on my own, without you there. I had to grieve her, I had to grieve you. I went to your funeral. I sat for months thinking I was all alone in the world. I cried for you, I cried for our daughter. Alone. You made me do that alone and you think sorry is good enough?”“No, I don’t,” he answered. “Sorry is never going to make things better. But I’m here now and whatever you need me to do to make this up to you, you just tell me and I’ll do it.”“Give me the last six months back,” Rachel shrieked. “Give me back my daughter and my husband. Can you do that? No, of course not. There’s nothing you can do.” Tears were streaming down her face and she quickly becoming hysterical. “Can you take away all the pain I felt? Can you take away all the days I cried until I was drained and empty? Can you take away the hole you put in my heart?”“No,” he said quietly. He hadn’t expected this to be easy but it was so much harder than he’d imagined. He had thought Rachel would scream at him for faking his death but then throw herself into his arms, so glad to have him back that everything else melted away. Instead she was so hurt he wasn’t sure there was hope for them to reconcile.“Just go, Drake. Leave me alone. I don’t want to see you, I don’t want to talk to you, I don’t want you to contact me or call me.”He never cried but right now tears stung his eyes. This couldn’t be goodbye, it couldn’t be how things ended between them. “I love you, Rachel.”“I know you do, thats what makes this hurt so much more. Go, please. You said you’d do whatever I asked, and I’m asking you to go.”As much as it killed him, Drake had to respect her wishes.Quietly he stood and walked out the door without one last look back, it was too hard to see her sitting there with her dark eyes twin bottomless pools of pain.Outside the door, he paused, “Goodbye my Snow White,” he whispered. -
Week 89 – Bright lights were everywhere, the room was unfamiliar . . . where was she?
Bright lights were everywhere, the room was unfamiliar . . . where was she?
Rachel had no idea.
“Open your eyes right now,” a voice ordered.
It was Drake’s voice, so she must be dead, right? She didn’t feel dead. The throbbing pain in her shoulder was a huge giveaway.
“Snap out of it, I’m not losing you again.”
She was laid down and sudden intense pressure on her bleeding shoulder made her flinch, and like a button had been pressed made her eyes pop open.
Drake’s eyes looked down at her but from Drake’s face.
She was so confused.
“Who are you?” she asked.
“You know who I am,” the man replied.
“You can’t be. Drake is dead.”
“No I’m not. I’m right here.”
That made no sense. Drake had been tortured to death in front of her. She had been at his funeral. She had spent the last several months grieving him and their stillborn daughter.
Alone.
Drake would never have let her go through that.
“It was the only way to keep you safe. At least I thought it was,” he said, pain written all over his face and his voice.
This was surreal.
This was crazy.
She had been mourning a man who wasn’t really dead.
Her husband, the man she loved and adored, had let her suffer. Had let her feel the worst pain a person could feel. Had left her alone to cry herself to sleep every night. But every tear she had shed had been a lie, and so was the man she thought she loved.
With one hand keeping pressure on her wound, he tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “I’ll never leave you again.”
No.
He wouldn’t.
Because she would never be stupid enough to let him back into her life.
Rachel turned her head away from Drake and closed her eyes, shutting him out.
Drake’s lies had shattered her heart into a million pieces and she didn’t think she could ever put them back together.
Exhausted she let the pain spiral her away into unconsciousness.

Week 88 – In a heartbeat the door burst open
Something clunked somewhere in the house.
Rachel wasn’t sure what it was, probably nothing.
Apparently the man standing above her bed thought differently. “Go check that out,” he growled at his men. Then he turned to her, “Is that him? Is that your husband?”
It looked like raping her had dropped off the program which psychologically she knew was a relief but wasn’t really feeling any. Why was he asking about Drake? Drake was dead, she’d gone to his funeral, she’d watched his casket get lowered into the ground, she had spent the last few months grieving him.
Maybe he meant the man who had been here earlier? The one who had also called her Snow White. The man who felt like Drake but didn’t look like him.
“I know he’s alive, and I know he was here tonight. We’ve been watching, waiting for that traitor to show his face here. So tell me where he is.”
Even is she wanted to answer his questions she had no idea what he was talking about.
She was too tired to try to figure out his games. The knife he’d stuck in her shoulder was still there, and he grabbed the handle and yanked it back and forth sending fresh waves of pain rolling over and over her body until she thought she would pass out.
Then his hands curled around her neck, squeezing tightly. His eyes practically shot daggers at her and he was screaming something but she could no longer hear him.
It looked like tonight was going to turn into a repeat of the night Drake had been killed. This man and his gang would rape and torture her until she died.
Maybe that was a good thing.
Not the torture and rape part but the dying part. At least then she would be reunited with her family. Her husband and the precious baby girl that never got to take her first breath or open her beautiful eyes because this man had killed her before she was born.
Something was happening around her, but the lack of oxygen was making her sluggish and she couldn’t figure out what.
Then in a heartbeat the door burst open.
Shots were fired.
People were screaming, their words an unintelligible blur.
The man choking the life out of her was thrown to the side and she could hear the sound of something being smashed into the floor over and over again.
Then she was being cradled in a pair of strong arms. She could smell Drake and when she looked up she saw his face smiling down at her.
She happily walked into death to join him.

Week 87 – Metal clanged loudly
He should have stayed dead.
Dead was easy.
Dead was safe.
Dead was lonely.
And that was exactly why Drake had come back for his wife. He couldn’t stand living without her. He couldn’t stand keeping his distance, he couldn’t stand not touching her, not kissing her, not making love to her. He couldn’t stand by and watch from a distance while she died a slow death from grief.
He’d heard that people could die of a broken heart he just hadn’t really believed it until he’d seen with his own eyes it happening to Rachel.
So he had come back for her only Ian Black and his men had been watching the house, and he’d led Rachel right back into the dangerous situation they had both barely just survived.
Drake had always known that going undercover was dangerous. He had known that he might lose his life, he just hadn’t really believed that that side of his life would touch Rachel. He’d thought that the darkness couldn’t touch the light, but it had. And Rachel had paid such a high price.
Now she was paying again.
He had no idea how he was going to get them both out of this alive. Ian had five other men with him, six against him and an injured Rachel, he didn’t like those odds.
These men had to die.
If they didn’t he and Rachel would never be safe. They could run but sooner or later Ian would track him down.
One of the men in Rachel’s bedroom was unzipping his pants. Drake would not allow that man to rape his wife. He couldn’t survive that again. Watching them do that to her that night had been hell. Being held down while those animals defiled his wife. That wasn’t happening again.
Pulling out his cell phone he dialled 911, then scanned the attic where he’d hidden out when those men broke in here. He felt like a coward hiding while those men got to Rachel, but Ian believing that Rachel knew where he was was the only thing keeping her alive right now.
Divide and conquer that was the only chance they had of surviving till daybreak.
Drake grabbed one of the weights from his old set, someone, maybe Rachel, must have packed it away up here. Carrying it to the far end of the attic he dropped it, metal clanged loudly, and when he hurried back to stand above Rachel’s room he could hear Ian issuing orders to his men to find out who made the noise.
This was it.
Both he and Rachel would either be tortured and killed, or by some miracle they would watch the sunrise side by side.

Week 86 – She couldn’t breathe
He had called her Snow White.
No one but Drake called her that.
But Drake was dead.
Rachel was so confused. The man in her bedroom called her by the name only her husband had used but he wasn’t her husband. The man who had been in her bathroom earlier had felt like Drake but he hadn’t looked like Drake.
If this man wasn’t Drake how did he know Drake’s nickname for her?
Had Drake called her that that night?
Rachel didn’t think so but it was hard to remember.
“Open you eyes, Snow White,” the man snarled. He was close enough that she could feel his breath on his cheek. His breath was hot, and it smelled bad, she remembered that from that night.
She was afraid to comply but she was more afraid not to. She already knew what this man was capable of. She inched her eyes open and saw that there were at least half a dozen men in her room.
She couldn’t breathe.
Last time she had been saved, snatched away from death at the last minute. But who would save her this time? The man-whoever he was-that had been in her bathroom earlier appeared to be long gone.
She was on her own.
Rachel wished she had a plan.
Anything would do.
“Where is he?” the man beside her bed asked.
Where was who? She had no idea what he was talking about.
He pulled out a knife and held it up so it glimmered in the light. “Where is he?” the man repeated.
“Wh-who?” she asked.
“Your husband.”
What a stupid question. This man knew where Drake was he was the one who had killed him. “H-he’s d-d-dead.”
“Still sticking with that story, huh?” the smile he shot her was beyond menacing. It was pure, unadulterated evil. “We’ll see how long that lasts.” The man plunged his knife into her shoulder, then gestured to one of his men.
It wasn’t until the man came towards her and unzipped his pants that she realised she had never put any clothes on after the shower. She was naked, and injured, and completely at these men’s mercy.
Rachel hoped whatever they were going to do they would hurry up and get it over with. At least she had death to look forward to. In death she could find Drake.
She slipped away to a quiet, peaceful place in her mind where what was happening couldn’t touch her.
