Week 345 – She no longer knew who this was
She was in big trouble.
How had she thought she could do this on her own?
Natasha was way past needing help only she didn’t know how to go about asking for it now. She’d been poking her nose where it didn’t belong, following a trail she thought was simple and straightforward, but now she no longer knew who this was, no longer knew who she was looking for.
Give up, a voice inside her head urged.
But she’d never given up on anything before in her life and she wasn’t going to start now.
There had to be a way to figure out at the company was siphoning off money. As badly as she wanted to hang around and keep digging she’d tempted fate enough for one night. It was time to get out of here, she’d try again tomorrow night.
Grabbing her purse, Natasha was at the lifts when she hard a sound behind her.
She wasn’t alone.
Someone else was in the office well after closing time.
Was it the person who was stealing money from her Grandfather’s company?
“Act natural,” she whispered to herself even as she knew she was way too tense for that. Trying to relax her posture, act like she really had just come back for her coat, which was her excuse if she’d met anyone, Natasha knew she was failing dismally.
Finally the lift opened and she hurried inside, pushing the button a little too hard. As the doors closed she could have sworn she saw the new guy standing in the hall. The new guy couldn’t be the embezzler. Could he? The money had been going missing long before he started working here, but maybe he was an accomplice? Or he was just there because he really had forgotten something.
Whoever the embezzler was she was going to have to watch her back. For the last two weeks she could have sworn she was being watched. And she was positive that someone had been inside her apartment the day before.
The thief knew she was onto them and she had no idea what her next move should be.
