Week 145 – Anything but that
Honey coloured eyes, auburn hair, freckles across her nose and cheeks, Tayla looked exactly the same as he remembered only she had blossomed into a gorgeous woman. She had just the right amount of curves, round breasts that looked like they would perfectly fit in his hands, and seeing her again after more than a decade made Dean want to shove her up against the wall, kiss her breathless, and then pick things up right where they had left off.Only he’d abandoned her back then.Only he’d broken her heart.Only by the way she was looking at him she hated him.Only he wasn’t here for pleasure. This was work.A man was dead and what they had found at the his apartment had led them to Tayla. This would be easier if she didn’t look so darn sexy, with those kissable lips and this expressive eyes that could never hide what she were thinking. And right now she was thinking about how much he had hurt her. So many times over the last decade he had wanted to track her down, explain that night, and see if she was interested in seeing what could have been between them. But he always backed out.Because he was a coward. He’d been a coward back then and he was a coward now.Keeping his voice cold, because it was the only way he knew how to mask the mess of emotions inside him he ignored Tayla’s questions and said, “We need you to come down to the station.”Tayla was white as a sheet and wobbled a little. “Am I under arrest? Are you going to put me in handcuffs?”Why did she have to say that? Anything but that because now all he could picture was her, naked in bed, handcuffed and begging him to touch her.“Lets go,” he said, refusing to give her more information because he had a job to do. He was Dean the cop right now, not Dean the man who had thought about Tayla every day for a decade. If his partner got wind of his feelings for Tayla he would be off this case before he could blink, and sad as it was if this was the only way he could spend time around Tayla he would take it.He wanted a chance to earn her forgiveness, her trust, and her heart. If it turned out she wasn’t a murderer. -
Week 144 – Love this ending
“Its been a year.”
“And?” Tayla glared at her colleague who also happened to be her best friend.
“And I think its okay to move on if you want to,” Mackenzie patiently replied, not deterred by her angry glower or the frosty tone of her voice.
“I know that,” Tayla snapped. It had been a year since her husband died and she knew that there was no right or wrong when it came to moving on after the loss of a loved one. She and Mackenzie were both trauma counsellors, they’d been friends since the first day of kindergarten, gone through something traumatic together, decided to both study psychiatry, both specialised in trauma counselling, and had opened their practice together. There was no one on this earth who knew her better than her best friend.
No one except her husband.
Only he wasn’t on this earth anymore.
He was dead, had been killed by some fourteen year old rebel who had decided to go joyriding with his girlfriend in his dad’s convertible. He’d lost control of the car, plowed straight into Max’s car, killing him instantly.
Her husband was gone, there was a hole in her heart that would never be filled, and to be quite honest she didn’t want to fill it. Tayla might be only twenty-nine, but she couldn’t imagine falling in love again, so she was resigned to living out the rest of her life alone.
“Tay, don’t do that,” Mackenzie said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as they turned off the lights in their offices, closed the doors, and started walking down the hall to the reception room and the exit to their suite.
“Do what?” she asked, all innocent.
“Pretend that you’re okay with being alone. I know Max, and I know that he would want you to find someone else to share your life with. He was the least selfish guy on the planet and he would want you to be happy.”
“I am happy,” she protested. As happy as a widow who was still grieving could be anyway.
“Liar,” Mackenzie muttered, but before she could say more the door to their suite was opened and two good looking men in suits stepped through it.
Wait.
She knew one of those men.
Dean Franelle.
She had known him almost as long as she had known Mackenzie. He’d been her older brother’s best friend, she’d had a crush on him for as long as she could remember but to her she was just Squirt, the annoying kid sister of his best friend. One night, just before she left for college, there had been one night of magical lovemaking, and while she had dreamed of a future for the two of them he’d had different ideas. He’d taken her virginity then been gone before she woke in the morning. He’d broken her heart but Max had mended it before breaking it all over again with his death.
But she wasn’t that sweet, shy girl anymore, standing in the shadows making up fantasies of what it would be like to be carried in Dean’s strong arms, kissed by that mouth with the dimples on either side, made love to by that body that would put any model on the cover of the romance books she loved to shame. This time she was going to be the one to snub him like he didn’t matter then never see him again so she could finally say love this ending to their little story.
Now she was a woman who was well and truly fully prepared to spend the rest of her years alone. A sexy body wasn’t enough to entice her anymore.
“Come on, Mackenzie, lets go,” she growled, intending to stalk right past Dean and his friend.
“Umm, okay, but shouldn’t we like, you know, find out what they want?” Mackenzie asked.
“I don’t care what they want,” she huffed, releasing her grip on her friend, if Mackenzie wanted to stand here and listen to Dean then she could but she was leaving.
“You can’t leave, Tayla,” Dean said, grabbing her arm as she tried to walk past him, and darn it if her stupid body didn’t respond instantly to his touch. It had been twelve months and nine days since Max died, and twelve months and eleven days since she had last had been with a man, this stupid electricity that was zapping through her body was nothing more than a natural reaction to a physically pleasing specimen.
“I most certainly can,” she said, trying to pull herself free but he wouldn’t release her.
“Uh, I’m getting the vibe that there’s something going on here, do you two know each other?” Dean’s friend asked.
“He broke her heart,” Mackenzie supplied.
“Ah,” the man nodded like that all made sense.
“We’re here about a murder,” Dean informed them, his tone cold and clipped, nothing like the Dean she remembered. “One of your patients was murdered, Tayla.”
One of her patients was murdered? Which one? How? Who did it? Since Dean was still friends with her brother she knew that he was a cop and this other man was no doubt his partner. If they were here informing her of this murder did that mean they thought that she had committed it?
The color drained from her face and she was suddenly ice cold. “Do you think I did it?”

Week 143 – Finally, ever after
It was hard to believe that only hours had passed since he had last been pacing up and down a hospital corridor waiting to be allowed to see Lacey.
After killing her ex-husband, Connor had had to take out another four men before he was finally able to call for an ambulance, and by then Lacey had been unconscious, her skin had been burning up, and the gunshot wound on her leg enflamed and clearly infected.
He had never been so afraid in his life.
A crazed, obsessive madman he could stare down without blinking, guns and knives didn’t faze him, his own life hanging in the balance was nothing, but the fear of losing Lacey brought him to his knees in a kind of cold, vicelike grip that threatened to tear him to shreds. She was special, the kind of special that you built a lifetime on, and he wanted a chance to see if there could be something between them that could make them both happier than they could contemplate.
Finally, ever after seemed like something he didn’t have to dread because he might actually get a happy ending. He was tired of his brother and his friends all getting married, living out their dreams, while he went home alone to a cold bed each night.
Now it was his turn.
“Detective Zaal?”
He stopped pacing to face the pretty woman standing before him. The doctor didn’t look stressed, or concerned, so he let himself relax. “Yes. Can I go and see Lacey now?”
“She’s resting, we’re giving her antibiotics via IV and she’s probably going to need to spend a few days here,” the doctor explained.
“But she’s going to be okay?” As far as he was concerned that was all that mattered, the doctors could do whatever they needed to do make sure that happened.
“She’s going to be okay,” the woman nodded.
He might have mumbled a thank you as he took off for her room, he wasn’t really sure, he just knew that he needed to see her. Half his brain expected to find her bed empty, like it had been last time, but when he opened the door to her room he found her there. She was lying on the bed, her skin as pasty pale as the sheets, her eyelashes fanned out on her cheeks, her blonde hair framing her face. Even unconscious in a hospital bed she was stunning.
Careful not to disturb her, Connor pulled the room’s one chair over to the bed and carefully picked up her hand.
At his touch her eyelashes fluttered, and he whispered, “Sleep, Lace, you’re safe now.”
Instead of drifting back to sleep, Lacey’s blue eyes blinked heavily open. “Connor,” she murmured with a smile when she saw him sitting beside her. “Was it a dream? Is TJ dead?”
“It wasn’t a dream,” he assured her running his fingers through her long, blonde locks. “You’re really safe now, he can never hurt you again.”
“Thank you,” she said, her eyes tearing up. “You saved my life more times than I can count.”
“It was nothing,” he said, waving off her gratitude.
“It wasn’t,” she said firmly. A frown creased her brow and she lifted her free hand to touch one of the cuts on his face. “You’re hurt.”
“I’m fine,” he promised, while she’d been whisked off as soon as they’d arrived in the ER he had reluctantly allowed a doctor to take a look at his wounds, he was battered and bruised but perfectly fine. “Lacey,” he began.
“Yes,” she said immediately.
“You don’t even know what I was going to ask.”
“You were going to ask me out and the answer is yes,” she smiled, before her eyes drooped closed. “Stay, please.”
“Wouldn’t dream of going anywhere.” Connor still held her hand, and as she drifted back off to sleep, he tilted his head back, resting it against the back of the chair, and closed his own eyes. His happily ever after was sleeping beside him, and with a smile on his face he joined her in slumberland.

Week 142 – Its so hot
All of a sudden Connor launched up, chair still swinging off his wrist, and slammed into TJ.The two men scuffled, but everything was a little blurry. The world around her was starting to get a little fuzzy around the edges.Like she was here but not really here. Her leg was burning where the bullet had gone in earlier today and Lacey wondered absently whether it was infected. She sagged and the added weight on her arms and shoulders was unbearable, or at least it would be if she wasn’t fading in and out.Suddenly there were hands on her and she screamed.“It’s me, Lace, its Connor,” a voice soothed, and she blinked and tried to clear her vision enough to make the face come into focus.Connor.It really was him.“TJ?” she asked, her voice hoarse.“Dead,” he replied. “Hold on, I’ll get you down.”Supporting her weight against his, Connor cuts the rope and as her arms drop Lacey cried out against the sudden onslaught of pain as her blood deprived limbs suddenly get blood flow restored.“I got you,” Connor croons in her ear, as he cuts the rope binding her wrists, then very gently scoops her into his arms.“It’s so hot,” she murmured, her head lolling to rest on Connor’s broad shoulder, the heat from the gunshot wound was spreading through her body like wildfire.“Its okay, just hold on, I’ll get you help,” Connor said, his voice panicked, but it also sounded faraway. “Lacey, stay with me. Don’t you pass out on me. Hold on, Lace. Don’t give up on me.”She wanted to do as he begged. She really did.But the culmination of the shooting, the gunshot, seeing her best friend lying dead in a pool of blood, the explosion, TJ getting her back was all too much for her exhausted body to take and Lacey found her eyes fluttering closed and her mind going blank. -
Week 141 – Showtime
TJ was touching Lacey.
That was all Connor could think about.
The man was putting his filthy, disgusting hands all over Lacey.
“Showtime,” TJ sang at Lacey as he pulled out a knife. “You think you can walk away from me, that you can leave? How about I write my name on your skin, remind you that you will always belong to me.”
TJ produced a knife and used it to cut away Lacey’s clothes, then pressed it into the smooth, white skin on her chest. Blood bubbled and leaked out, Lacey trembled, balanced awkwardly with her arms yanked behind her back and restrained in what he knew was a way that would leave her in agony.
The sight of blood on Lacey made him see red, it got a deep protective rage bubbling inside him that seemed to fuel him, give him extra strength. Connor launched up, one arm coming free from the rope that bound him, and he slammed the chair that was still attached to his other wrist into TJ and the man stumbled and dropped the knife.
Since his gun had been taken from him when the explosion knocked him and Lacey out he lunged for the knife, the only weapon in the room.
Just as his fingers were curling around it TJ slammed into him sending the both skidding across the floor. Connor wasn’t going to let this man win because if he did then Lacey would die. And that wasn’t happening on his watch.
