  • Week 120 – But something was niggling at the back of her mind – if only she could remember what it was

    He kissed her.

    Logan had just kissed her.

For the moment that pushed every other thought out of Amelia’s head. She had dreamed about that ever since she’d seen him moving in across the street but she had never thought that it would happen. She was too shy, he was too sexy, in her mind that meant nothing between them could ever happen.

And yet here he was kissing her.

“Sorry,” he mumbled and abruptly straightened. “I shouldn’t have done that.”

That was not what you wanted to hear from the guy who had just kissed you

Apparently noticing her face falling, Logan quickly added, “Not because it wasn’t a great kiss but …” he waved his hand at her and the hospital room.

    Right.

    She’d just been attacked.

    Twice.

And now she was in the hospital.

“Do you remember anything, Amelia? Anything at all? Even the tiniest of things could be helpful.” His ice blue eyes piercing as he looked at her, as though he wanted to reach inside her brain and find the answers he needed.

If he could do that she would gladly let him, she couldn’t remember anything.

But something was niggling at the back of her mind – if only she could remember what it was. Every time she tried to grab hold of it it darted away.

“I don’t remember anything, I’m sorry,” she replied in a small voice. She hurt all over and all she wanted to do was just curl up and go to sleep and not wake up until this was all over.

“No, don’t be sorry,” Logan told her, taking her hand and squeezing tightly. “Pete said that you had a concussion, coupled with the psychological trauma its no wonder you can’t remember. We will figure this out.”

She wanted to believe that but her hope was slipping away.

“Logan, your partner and some other cops are on their way,” her doctor, Pete as Logan had called him, stuck his head in the door.

    Cops.

For some reason that sent a shudder through her and she began to shake.

It didn’t go unnoticed. “Amelia, whats wrong?” Logan asked.

“I don’t know,” she answered honestly.

“Something about what my brother just said upset you,” he said thoughtfully. “Maybe it was a cop who hurt you.”

    Maybe.

The problem was she had no idea.

Her body might remember things but her brain didn’t.

“If it was a cop then you can’t be here when they get here,” Logan seemed to be speaking more to himself than to her. “We have to get you out of here until I can figure this out. Pete, tell them she discharged herself and you don’t know where she went.”

Without asking her what she thought, Logan tossed back her covers and began disconnecting the machines she was attached to. Then he wrapped a blanket around her, picked her up, and headed out the door.

    She should argue with him.

Tell him she wasn’t going anywhere with him, she hardly knew him, she couldn’t just run away with him.

    But she didn’t.

All she did was curl her arm around Logan’s neck, and rested her head on his shoulder. The only thing she trusted right now was Logan, and she would gladly go anywhere with him.
  • Week 119 – Well that’s a hellava story

Logan paced up and down the ER. What was taking so long? They’d been here for over an hour already and yet he hadn’t been let in to see Amelia, nor had anyone given him an update on how she was doing.

    He was going crazy.

Over and over in his mind he had been replaying everything that happened tonight, trying to see how he could have gotten a different outcome.

Unfortunately he couldn’t come up with anything.

    “Logan.”

He turned when he heard his name called, and saw his brother, who happened to work in the emergency room of the hospital where the ambulance had brought Amelia. He had insisted that his brother be the one to treat her, partly because he knew he’d definitely be kept in the loop, but also because he trusted his brother with Amelia. They still didn’t know who had been in her house and attacked them at his place, so as far as he was concerned every single person was a suspect.

“How is she?” he demanded, rushing his brother.

“Concussion, cracked ribs, bruising, the cuts on her chest weren’t deep enough to need stitches, and the burn on her leg has been treated,” Pete explained.

    “She’s going to be okay?”

“She will be,” his brother assured him.

The words tried to stick in his throat but he forced them out. “I found her naked was she sexually assaulted?”

    “She was.”

That made him want to hit something, hit someone, specifically the someone who had hurt Amelia. When he found this guy he was not going to be responsible for his actions. “Does she remember anything?”

    “She says she doesn’t.”

“You believe her, right?” He’d seen the fear on Amelia’s face and he didn’t think that she would lie to him but he needed more than that for his report.

“She hit her head twice, add the psychological trauma, and I believe she truly doesn’t remember. What went down tonight?”

“Someone broke into Amelia’s house, I heard screams and found her lying on the ground outside her house, she’d jumped out of the window. Someone set her house on fire, and the debris burned her leg. I brought her to my place to put cold water on the burn while we waited for the paramedics and whoever was inside her house must have followed us. They knocked me out and when I came to I found her tied up with the cuts on her chest.”

“Well that’s a hellava story,” Pete said.

    It was.

And he had no idea how he was going to end the story. He needed to find this man but he didn’t know how. “Can I go and see her?”

    “Sure.”

Logan walked over to the small cubicle where Amelia was and paused at the door. What did he say to her? He had promised her that they would find a way to sort this out but he had no idea how he was going to do that.

When he opened the door her large amber eyes found his and they were so full of fear, and confusion, and hopelessness, but also trust.

    She trusted him.

Without even thinking about what he was doing, Logan crossed the room and kissed her.
  • Week 118 – Amazing can’t wait to read more

    Hands were touching her.

Amelia had no idea why but for some reason she sensed this wasn’t a good thing.

Her eyes snapped open and when she saw Logan standing above her she immediately relaxed. If he was here then everything was okay.

    Wait.

Why exactly was her sexy neighbour in her bedroom?

Just then he looked down at her and faked a smile when he saw she was awake. She could tell it was fake because it didn’t reach his eyes, she just didn’t know why.

“Everything’s going to be okay, an ambulance should be here any second and more cops are coming,” he told her.

    An ambulance?

    Cops?

    What was going on?

He reached over and fiddled with her wrist and it wasn’t until he set it gently down at her side that she realised she was tied to a bed. And it wasn’t her bed. Where was she?

“Logan?” she croaked, her voice was weak and that scared her. Amelia could feeler heart start to race and her pulse begin to pound. “What’s going on?”

He cocked his head, his brow furrowing. “What do you mean?”

“Where am I? What happened? Why am I tied to a bed?” she rattled off questions, her uneasiness was growing by the second. She might not remember anything since spying on her neighbour and then going to bed but she knew something bad had happened.

“You don’t remember?” he asked her.

Amelia shook her head then wished she hadn’t when pain sliced through her skull.

“Someone broke into your house, you screamed and woke me up, then you jumped out of your bedroom window. I found you but someone set your house on fire. You burned your leg so I brought you to my place to put cold water on the burn while we waited for the paramedics and whoever was indoor house must have followed us. They knocked me out and when I came to I found you like this.”

That sounded like something out of a book. “Amazing can’t wait to read more,” she mumbled.

    “What?”

“Nothing,” she said as she looked down her body. Her other wrist and both her ankles were still tied up, and she was naked.

    Naked.

Yeah that made her fear rack up sever notches.

What had happened to her once Logan had been knocked out.

“Its going to be okay, Amelia,” Logan said noticing her growing fear. “I don’t know how, but I promise you that we will figure this out.” He freed her remaining limbs and then wrapped her in a blanket and lifted her into his arms, cradling her gently. “I promise, we’ll work this out,” he said again.

As she clutched at him, the only solid thing in her world right now, for some reason she believed that he could make all of this better.
  • Week 117 – Night sounds falter, eerily silent . . .

    Slowly he began to wake.

Night sounds falter, eerily silent . . .

    Then not so silent.

    Running water.

Logan could hear the sound of running water.

That instantly snapped him awake and he bolted upright, ignoring the resulting stab of pain between his eyes and the flash of dizziness that made him want to lay straight back down.

    Amelia.

The bath where he’d put her to perform first aid on her burn was empty.

    She was gone.

All he remembered was Amelia’s eyes growing wide, her shrieking his name, and then something slamming into his head.

Now whoever had broken into her home, set it on fire, and then followed them here had taken her.

Springing to his feet – or staggering might be more accurate – he ran to his bedroom intending to call for help.

Instead he skittered to a stop in the doorway.

    Amelia wasn’t gone.

    She was here.

Lying naked and spreadeagled on his bed, her wrists and ankles tied to the corners of the bed with rope. The burn on her leg was red, blistered, and peeling, with a kind of yellowy liquid oozing out. On her chest there were bloody marks, as he stepped closer he saw what they were. The marks spelled out a word. Butterfly.

Logan ran to her and touched his fingertips to her neck checking for a pulse.

Relief left him shaking when he found one.

    They were both alive.

None of this made any sense. Hopefully when Amelia woke up she could shed some light on this very unusual situation.

  • Week 116 – Why were they soaking wet?

    A loud explosion startled her.

    What was that?

Something was roaring and crackling, and she turned her head towards the sound then immediately wished she hadn’t.

    Her house was on fire.

Not just on fire it was a raging inferno.

Tears were rolling down her cheeks, she was aching all over, she was scared and confused, and hot . . .

Her house wasn’t just on fire it had exploded and burning pieces of debris were everywhere. One had landed right beside her and Logan, and it had caught the edge of her pajama pants on fire.

    That should hurt.

    Amelia knew that.

But she was caught in some kind of fog that protected her from feeling pain.

When the house blew up Logan had thrown himself over her, but now he seemed to realise something was wrong. He darted up, took one look at her, then snatched her up and ran with her.

    She didn’t really no where.

Suddenly the light was too bright.

She could hear sirens but they were muffled.

    Then her pajamas were wet.

    Why were they soaking wet?

She thought she should know the answer but she didn’t.

“Amelia?” Logan’s voice floated through the fog to her.

“Yeah?” she said, because she knew he wanted her to say something.

“Are you with me? It looks like you zoned out, I need you with me, okay?”

“Okay,” she agreed, and tried really hard to focus. They were inside now, in a bathroom, she assumed it was Logan’s, he’d put her in the bath and was running cold water. “I’m cold,” she said, starting to shake.

“Your PJs caught fire, your leg got burned, we’re going to try to keep it as cool as we can while we wait for the paramedics,” he said, speaking slowly as though he thought she might not still be quite with him.

The fog that had descended on her was evaporating by the second, and as it went the pain in her leg came back. Along with the shock of everything that had happened tonight.

At least she was safe now. She no longer believed that Logan was a threat to her, he was just her sexy cop neighbour who had saved her life.

She was about to thank him when movement caught her attention.

    Someone else was here.

“Logan,” she shrieked a split second too late as someone sprung into the room and knocked Logan out.

Now she was on her own.
